The Haitian Association of the Coastal South Inc. is a nonprofit organization committed to serving, uniting, and uplifting the Haitian community throughout coastal Georgia and surrounding areas. Founded on principles of cultural pride, inclusion, and empowerment, our mission is to support the Haitian diaspora through advocacy, education, social services, and community development.
Haitians have a rich history rooted in the broader history of the South in the United States. The relation between Haitians and the Coastal South is significant and dates back to the American Revolutionary War. During the Battle of Savannah in 1779, Haitian soldiers played a crucial role. The Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue, an all-Black regiment composed of free men of color from Haiti, fought alongside American and French forces against the British. This regiment was one of the most homogeneous and efficient allied groups, fighting with obstinacy and boldness1011. A memorial statue dedicated to the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue stands in Savannah's Franklin Square, recognizing their contribution to the fight for American independence.
We strive to preserve our rich heritage while addressing the evolving needs of our members—offering resources that promote economic growth, civic engagement, and cultural understanding. The association will play a crucial role in providing support and resources to the Haitian community here on the southern Coast, helping them navigate the challenges of immigration and integration while preserving their cultural heritage. From hosting cultural events and youth initiatives to partnering with local agencies, we work to ensure every voice in our community is heard and valued.
Guided by a vision of connection and progress, we are proud to be a hub for Haitian identity, leadership, and resilience in the Coastal South.
Our mission is to uplift the Haitian community in the Coastal South by fostering education, promoting socio-economic growth, preserving our cultural heritage, and actively engaging with the community. We aim to empower our community and create lasting positive change through collaboration and participation.
Our vision is to create a thriving, empowered, and self-sufficient Haitian community in the Coastal South. We envision a future where every member of our community has access to quality education, economic opportunities, and a strong sense of cultural identity and belonging.
